Arden Lodge Horses Honoured at Southland Harness Racing Awards

The Southland Harness Racing Awards Committee announced the results for the 2020-2021 season on the Southern Harness website on 5th October.

Arden Lodge is very proud that their Bettor's Delight mare Southwind Arden has been awarded the prestigious Macca Lodge Broodmare of the Year title. From 13 nominations which included Glenburn Jewel, Kylie Ree and Mach N Elle, her selection was based on the performances of her progeny for this past season only.

Leading the way for her progeny was her 4 year old Somebeachsomewhere gelding South Coast Arden who had 13 starts for 6 wins and a second. He won stakes of $122,558 for the season. His owners and trainer Brent Mangos had shown great patience with the horse in his early career and he rewarded them with a Group 1 win in the Civtec 4 Year Old Emerald on Jewels Day in Cambridge. He was an impressive winner for driver Natalie Rasmussen when he made history winning from barrier 7, recording the fastest mile rate of the day - 1.51.6. This is also the fastest mile rate of any horse for the whole of New Zealand for the season.

Prior to his Jewels win South Coast Arden won the Addington Elmwood Trading Company Winter Cup to replicate his mother's win of the same race in 2012. He also won the Walker Davey Searells Free-for-all at Addington.

Her 3 year old Captaintreacherous gelding Platinum Stride has been racing in Australia this season for 3 wins, 3 seconds and a third from ten starts. He was placed third in the Group 1 Caduceus 3 YO Classic and second in the Group 3 Breeders Crown 2 YO Silver. He earned stakes of $27, 061 and ran a best time of 1.54.4.

Southwind Arden (2007) is by Bettor's Delight out of a past winner of the Southland Broodmare of the Year title Winter Rose (by In The Pocket). Winter Rose was also a Broodmare Excellence of New Zealand recipient in 2015 and of the Elite Broodmare of Southland award in 2019.

Southwind Arden won nine times in her career for trainer Mark Purdon individually and for Mark Purdon and Grant Payne in partnership. She earned $150k in stakes.

She is a full sister to Bettor's Strike (16 wins $890k) and a half to Rocknroll Arden (6 wins $172k) and Group 1 winner Arden's Choice (7 wins $282k).

Southwind Arden's first foal South Beach Arden, by Somebeachsomewhere, raced for the Stivens and the 'It's A Shore Thing' Syndicate, showing early talent with two wins but died due to injury. Her second foal by Rocknroll Hanover is unraced. Indiana Arden (by Panspacificflight and three quarter sister to Arden's Choice) is her fifth foal and she is in training for the Stivens. Her Art Major filly Goldie Arden sold at this year's NZB Standardbred yearling sale and there is a Captaintreacherous filly being offered at next year's sale. Unfortunately Southwind Arden is not having a foal this year but will be served by Captaintreacherous.

It is the fifth time that Arden Lodge has won a Southland Broodmare of the Year Award - the previous mares to win are:

Arden Regal (Nero's BB/Evasion) 2003

Arden's Dream (Son Of A Fella/Evasion) 2008

Winter Rose (In The Pocket/ Bella Chip) 2012

Tosca Hanover ( Walton Hanover/Tosti) 2016

Arden Messi (Bettor's Delight/Tosca Hanover) was awarded a sub 1:58 pin for his run at NZ Metro on 11-9-2020. These are awarded to horses raced by members of the Southland Standardbred Breeders Association.

South Coast Arden (Somebeachsomewhere/Southwind Arden) was awarded a Group Certificate for his win in the Group 1 Civtec 4 YO Emerald 6 June 2021 at Cambridge.
